Bernie Sanders asks New Paltz students to get involved in the 19th Congressional District race

Bernie Sanders returned to the Hudson Valley this week to ask nearly 2,000 supporters to get in Zephyr Teachout’s corner in her race for the 19th Congressional District against John Faso.

Teachout addressed a large, excited crowd at Hasbrouk Park in New Paltz, promising to listen to the voices of those in her district and to take those voices to Washington. “So I just want to warn you, when I go to Washington as your representative, you’re all coming along with me,” Teachout said, “We got this.”

Echoing her campaign slogan of “The People vs. The Billionaires,” Teachout told the enthusiastic crowd of New Platz students and local residents that the average contribution to her campaign has been $19.

She is running on a platform of environmental conservation, campaign finance reform, ending political corruption, and eliminating high stakes Common Core testing.

Teachout is running against Faso to replace Republican Congressman Chris Gibson, who is retiring. She is endorsed by Sanders, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the Sierra Club, the National Education Association, New York State United Teachers, National Nurses United, the Communication Workers of America, and EMILY’s List.

The 19th Congressional District comprises all of Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties, and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties.
