New York opens walk-in vaccination sites for those 60 and older

New York City — People file into the Javits Center in New York City to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations on Friday, April 23, 2021.

As of late last week, 16 COVID vaccination sites across New York are now accepting walk-in appointments for individuals age 60 and older.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the new walk-in vaccination sites last Wednesday during an event in Yonkers, joining Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblyman Nader Sayegh, Westchester County Executive George Latimer, and Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

“Every day our state moves closer to a post-pandemic future by vaccinating more New Yorkers, and we’re building on that momentum by making it easier for our residents to get vaccinated, expanding eligibility and opening new vaccination sites across the state,” Cuomo said. “We’re taking that effort a step further and making the vaccine more accessible to older New Yorkers by allowing walk-ins to get vaccinated.

The state is setting aside a vaccine allocation to facilitate this expanded vaccination access. There may be a wait for those opting to walk-in at some sites depending on demand. Additionally, all proof of identity and insurance information, if applicable, will be needed.

“To be at this site in Yonkers, in the community I represent, just a few blocks from my office and my home, to say that right now we are opening up to 60-plus, a walk-in option to come and get the vaccine that I’ve already gotten and I believe every one of us have gotten because it matters,” said Stewart-Cousins. “You’ll hear from all of my colleagues in government, all of us who are fighting this fight because all of us in the 10707 among other zip codes were so hard hit. The fact that FEMA heard our collective cries and the numbers show that we knew exactly what to do once this site got here. We got to work, and did it.”

As of Monday morning, 139,416 doses have been administered across the state in the last 24 hours, and more than 1.1 million doses have been administered over the past seven days.

The percent of New Yorkers with at least one vaccine dose is 44.1 percent and the percent of New Yorkers with completed vaccine series is 31.1 percent.

“Within the first few weeks there were just our zip codes, Mt. Vernon and Yonkers zip codes that were hardest hit, that were able to get the first round of shots in the first week,” Stewart-Cousins said last week. “Twelve thousand shots happened just at the very beginning. Right now, there are 22,000 who are completely vaccinated and – as the Governor said – we’ll be hitting 50,000 shots today. Still, we still are fighting. We still have more to do. I’m glad that it’s spring, I’m glad that people can, in many ways, walk to this site.”

The COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker Dashboard is available to update New Yorkers on the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. The New York State Department of Health requires vaccinating facilities to report all COVID-19 vaccine administration data within 24 hours; the vaccine administration data on the dashboard is updated daily to reflect the most up-to-date metrics in the state’s vaccination effort.
