Election Day is quickly approaching and it is still unclear whether there will be more than one gubernatorial debate scheduled between candidates Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Lee Zeldin.
As of now, there is only one scheduled debate that will be hosted by Spectrum News / NY1 on Tuesday, October 25 at 7 p.m.
The event will take place at Pace University in Manhattan and will be co-moderated by Spectrum anchors Susan Arbetter of Capital Tonight, and Errol Louis of Inside City Hall.
Congressman Zeldin has repeatedly asked for multiple debates, saying the people of New York deserve to see the two gubernatorial candidates across a wide array of mediums to ensure that both candidates are being as accessible as possible to their constituents.
“The New York City media market is not the only media market in the state,” Zeldin said in a statement on September 21. “It is important to have debates throughout the state to focus on issues specific to that particular region.”
The Legislative Gazette has reached out to both campaigns for a comment and further information regarding upcoming debates. This story will be updated if more debates are announced.
Among those who say they will definitely vote, Hochul has an 8-point lead over Zeldin — 52 to 44 percent — according to a Marist College poll released October 13.
In the same poll, Hochul leads Zeldin 51 to 41 percent among all registered voters statewide, including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a candidate.
The poll of 1,117 registered New York voters has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
