New to the Legislative Gazette this fall is Editor and faculty member Darren Johnson. He replaces longtime Editor and faculty member James Gormley, who has retired from the position after over two successful decades at the helm. Johnson is a longtime journalist who owns a small rural newspaper group in Washington County, NY, and an independent monthly paper, Campus News, in the New York Metro region. He most recently served at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, in North Adams, Mass., where he advised both the school paper and radio station and taught Journalism, and had done similar work for other colleges. He has a track record of modernizing legacy newspapers and increasing their digital presences, while also keeping them in print, and with mentoring students in hands-on journalism practicums. As the Legislative Gazette is now in its 47th year, Johnson sees it the perfect project for his skillset. “It stopped printing in 2018, but has kept its mission strong since then, of putting student journalists in the Capitol and giving them important work to do,” he said. “We are going to keep that effort going as well as hopefully revive the print edition, at least as a monthly paper, and also create a wire service to provide coverage to all New York newspapers – for free.” Johnson earned his BA and MFA in Writing from Southampton College.
