“I’m running because I love the North Country — plain and simple. I’ve spent my whole life here, and I know what it feels like when our communities are forgotten,” said Blake Gendebien.
Blake Gendebien, a Democratic candidate for New York’s 21st District, outlined his campaign’s priorities in a press brief on Nov. 10, emphasizing community engagement through town hall events. He addressed the newly vacant congressional seat, after current Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Schuylerville) announced her gubernatorial bid.
Gendebien, running to replace Stefanik, shared his background as a dairy farmer and community leader during the meeting. He also discussed key local issues such as affordability, immigration reform, veterans’ care, and support for small businesses. Gendebien expressed concern over the ongoing government shutdown and its detrimental effects on constituents in the North Country. He stressed the importance of representing rural America and bridging the gap between rural and urban perspectives.
Gendebien detailed his proposed efforts to secure $30 million in investment for the McAdam cheese plant in Chattagay, noting its role as a significant employer in the region. He highlighted agricultural topics, particularly dairy and its importance to the district’s economy. He also reiterated his commitment to advocating for healthcare access and affordability for rural residents.
Gendebien highlighted his nomination as the presumptive candidate following Congresswoman Stefanik’s withdrawal from the UN ambassador position earlier this year, when it at first seemed a special election would need to be held. Instead, the race for the NY-21 spot will conclude on Election Day 2026.
